Lucky 13

The 35th NSW State Champs kick off tomorrow at the Illawarra Yacht Club, and it will be the luckythirteenth time I have sailed in this regatta… the first as skipper. Since 2005 Dad and I have been in the top two in this regatta, this year we will be sailing in opposite positions. Hopefully I can do the team justice and Dad’s new shoulder holds together in the forecast southerly on…

Concertina

Yesterday was my first day of working in Sydney since the move was finalised two weeks ago. I am still working in the Australian Public Service, but now with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. Wow… I have had two great days! It feels a lot more natural than I thought it would to be back in Sydney. In a way it feels like the time I spent in Canberra has folded over to join…

Everything in between

The past few weeks I have been wrapping everything up here in Canberra, for at least the next year. Definitely sad, especially because the lake has been closed and I haven’t been able to get time on the water like I had hoped. I never thought I would leave Sydney and my Harbour, but now most will know I am pretty attached to “Lake Barely Tolerable”. Two and a half years…

Mini me

Not much to report from this week. Packing and planning for the move North has been all consuming. I have not been on the water for a week – for the first time in a very long time. Looking forward to hitting the training hard after my forced mini break! This weekend I will be on the water, possibly for the last time on a weekend for quite a while in Canberra. Thanks to Craig Davidson and Matty…

Skating to 27

A quiet week for me on the sailing front following the challenging NSW Laser State Champs last weekend and the start of many loads up to the new place in Sydney. The Laser States can only be described as challenging for all that were involved! Highlight of the weekend was definitely the reach in on Saturday in front of the storm front. I have never been that fast on a Laser before!  The race…

Ambassador and heading North

My biggest news for this week is that I have jumped on-board with DeckHardware as an Ambassador. I am really looking forward to having access to a great selection of brands including Allen and Liros, and most of all sharing the products with my sailing friends (I should now have a mean kit of spares). I am so lucky to be supported by some great companies and of course the people behind…

Capital Champ

Chris Eddes of the capital is now a national champion! [singlepic id=89 w=320 h=240 float=right] The Spiral Nationals wrapped up yesterday on Lake Macquarie, with just the one race in a strong but exceptionally shifty N-ENE breeze. My start was brilliant, about ten boats up from the pin. I could see the boat and the pin when I started thanks to some nice line sag, and managed to breathe for at…

Smashing starts

Today is the last day of the Spiral Nationals, and the weather looks to be just as tricky as the last three days! Yesterday we managed to sail two races, race six in the morning in a very light easterly, and then in the afternoon, race seven in about 12 to 17 knots of E-NE breeze. Chris and I both had a good day at the office. Results were on the board before racing (hooray!), with Chris (Eddes)…

Tennis and sailing

Day two at the Spiral Nationals was definitely tough as predicted following day one. The breeze was up compared to the first day, but had larger shifts from the E-NE direction due to more cloud activity. It was definitely a sail to the pressure kind of day, which at times felt a bit like the tennis… left… right… left… ace… right… right… unforced…

Upward Spiral

Happy Australia Day everyone! Hope you had a great day with your family and friends and to all who are racing, hope it is going well! The Spiral Nationals commenced yesterday for me from Teralba at the North-western end of Lake Macquarie in a very shifty and variable E-NE breeze, with cloud interference at times. A very mixed bag of results in the two races that were sailed, showing my potential…
