Sail Port Stephens 2018

Monday 9 April

What a stunning opening day for Sail Port Stephens in 2018 with 87 yachts taking to the water for the cruising divisions racing the Commodore’s Cup through until Wednesday, before the Performance, Cruising and IRC Racing joins in on Friday.
An 8-10 knot westerly, racing the “Pub to Pub” course was a beautiful spectacle on Nelson Bay, and even though the breeze faded, not one unhappy face was amongst the competitors as the apres-sailing kicked on well into the evening.
Racers will race offshore in a moderate sou’easter tomorrow, with 12-15 knots of nor’easter forecast to wrap up the first part of this event on Wednesday.

Tuesday 10 April

Day two of the Commodore’s Cup at Sail Port Stephens did not disappoint with all 87 yachts heading upwind and offshore in a sweet little sou’easter.
As they turned left out of the heads and and set their spinnakers to head north, I was lucky enough to witness the colourful parade of boats ranging in size from 22 to 61 feet. Just gorgeous with the landscape of the area in the back and foreground.
A large triangular course in the Bay today in 15 knots of nor’easter will no doubt deliver again for the final day of the Commodore’s Cup before the IRC, Super 12s and Sports Boats join in on Friday.

Wednesday 11 April

The final day of the Commodore’s Cup, the cruising focussed part of Sail Port Stephens, came to a close yesterday in classic nor’easter conditions.
With swells of over three metres offshore, the race committee wisely chose to keep the competitors in the bay to race their third of three races. The gradient northerly eased just after their first lap, only to build into a solid sea breeze for the final lap and beat home.
Competitors all raved about the regatta, not only because they had a quick ride home, but because the the party got underway early! The prizegiving ceremony highlight for me was definitely the best dressed competition for the Hawaiian themed “Beach Buoys Ball”, which I was lucky enough to host and award. Congratulations to Silver Minx on their matching shirts, shorts, and cabana hats, and Zenith and Black Sheep on winning the lucky door prize paddle boards from Pantaenius Sail & Motor Yacht Insurance.
It is quiet on Nelson Bay today, apart from some keen teams heading out to train, and the late arrival of some yachts who will join in for the Garmin NSW IRC Championship, the NSW Super 12 Championship or Sports Boat National Championship divisions tomorrow in addition to the Performance Racing and Cruising divisions.
If you are out racing over Friday to Sunday, be sure to enter the Pantaenius Cup by tomorrow, simply nominate your team and another, and the best placed duo will be in the running to win a paddle board each thanks to Pantaenius Sail & Motor Yacht Insurance. I will also be keeping an eye out on social media for the best on board pictures from the regatta, use #PantaeniusYachtInsurance for your chance to be featured, or win prizes at the presentation on Sunday evening!
