Day One: Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta kicks off from Southport Yacht Club
To kick off the new decade, the 11th Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta got underway today under a sunny sky in a building nor’easterly breeze with a fleet of 33 yachts.
The Race Officer, Southport Yacht Club’s own Mark Dingley opted to start the boats off on a Course 12, the Q1 extended course.
Taking the first race in the IRC Gold Coast Championship was Desperado, the Atkinson 24, owned by Graham Sherring. Second was the old and mini Black Jack RP42, now named Black Diamond and owned by Glenn Burrell with Hasta La Vista, Harley Cowlishaw’s Sydney 38od finishing in third on corrected time.
Daniel Farmer’s Sydney 41, B52 took the honours in PHS Division A in race one by almost four minutes on corrected time over Andy Lamont’s X442 Impulse X and David Chadkirk’s German Friers designed Cyclone.
In PHS Division B for race 1, Karlovic’s Rumba took the win, followed by Ball’s Bad Influence and then Chris Larsen’s Wild Spirit.
Cruising Non-Spinnaker Division was won by Pole Dancer, the Catalina owned by Carlos Selby, and the first multi-hull was the Privilege 48’ Catamaran Plan B owned by Grant Scurrah.
First, second and third in race one for the Trailable Division were all from the Skud 18 class, with Wild Goats owned by Ross Manning in first, RTL owned by Neil Rowsthorn in second, and Kamikaze owned by Ben Noonan in third.
By race two, the breeze had increased to about 12-13 knots and the Race Committee sent the fleet on Course 11, the Q1 course.
Backing it up with two from two wins in the IRC Gold Coast Championship was Desperado, the Atkinson 24 owned by Graham Sherring, with Black Diamond, the RP42 in second once again, and Lambourne’s Lambourdini in third.
PHS Division A was a slightly different story to race one in the second round, with M Daly’s Envy, David Chadkirk’s German Friers designed Cyclone again in second, and Sherring’s Desperado rounding out the podium.
In PHS Division B for race 2, it was a shuffle of the first podium, with Wild Spirit taking the gun, Rumba in second and Bad Influence in third.
Cruising Non-Spinnaker Division was again won by Pole Dancer, the Catalina owned by Carlos Selby, and the first multi-hull the Privilege 48’ Catamaran Plan B owned by Grant Scurrah.
First, second and third in race two for the Trailable Division were again all from the Skud 18 class, Kamikaze owned by Ben Noonan took the win the second time around over Wild Goats, with RTL in third.
The leaders overall after day one are Desperado in IRC, Envy, B52 and Cyclone are tied for the top spot in PHS Division 1, Rumba holds PHS Division 2, Pole Dancer leads the Cruising Non-Spinnaker Division, Plan B leads the multihull division, and Wild Goats leads the Trailable Division.
Day Two: Leaders emerge at Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta
The second day of the 11th Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta was raced today, offshore from Broadbeach from the Southport Yacht Club.
Over thirty yachts are taking part in the regatta this year, which includes the IRC Gold Coast Championship, where the champions will be the most consistently highly ranked yachts in their divisions and classes over a maximum of eight races.
Local Gold Coast boat, Desperado skippered by Graham Sherring have clocked up a perfect scorecard so far in the IRC Gold Coast Championship with four wins from four races, continuing their record from day one in the two races sailed today. Black Diamond, the RP42 had two second places to finish the day on second overall, with David Rose’s Kerisma the Kerr 37 finishing 4th in race 3 and 3rd in race 4 to move into third overall after day two.
In PHS Division A, Graham Sherring’s Desperado holds a firm grasp on the lead after a first and a fourth today to lead from David Chadkirk’s German Friers designed Cyclone. In third place overall is Impulse X owned by Andy Lamont who placed twelfth and first today to jump onto the podium.
In PHS Division B, Karlovic’s Rumba continues to lead for day two, after a first in race 3 and a third in race 4. Ball’s Bad Influence is in second place and Chris Larsen’s Wild Spirit is still in third, a replica of overall positions from day one.
Cruising Non-Spinnaker Division leaders are the team from Pole Dancer, the Catalina owned by Carlos Selby and second overall is Too Impetuous. The first multihull continues to be the Privilege 48’ Catamaran Plan B owned by Grant Scurrah.
First in the trailable division is Kamikaze owned by Ben Noonan after a fourth and a first today, second is Wild Goats owned by Ross Manning following a sixth and a second today and third is RTL owned by Neil Rowsthorn following a fifth and a third today. All three of these boats are in the Skud 18 class and part of the Southport Yacht Club’s disabled sailing program.

Day Three: Moving Day at Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta
Over thirty boats raced offshore from the Southport Yacht Club today for the third day of the 11th Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta.
After a very smart postponement ashore, racing got underway just an hour off schedule in a beautiful building nor’easter which peaked at the end of the day at 22 knots.
Local Gold Coast boat, Desperado skippered by Graham Sherring continue to lead the IRC Gold Coast Championship with five wins and a second from six races. With one race to go today, the pressure is on for them to finish it off. Black Diamond, the RP42 owned by Glenn Burrell had another second, but are the only team to have knocked the leaders off their perch, with a first in race six. They are still in second overall, and Hasta La Vista has moved up to third with a third in race five and a fifth in race six.
In PHS Division A, David Chadkirk’s German Friers designed Cyclone moved right up to the top of the leader board with an eighth and a fourth in races five and six respectively. Graham Sherring’s Desperado dropped down to second overall with a tenth and a ninth, and Daniel Farmer’s B52 also moved up with a pair of sevens.
In PHS Division B, Karlovic’s Rumba continues to lead over Ball’s Bad Influence and Chris Larsen’s Wild Spirit, continuing the repeat of overall positions from day one.
Cruising Non-Spinnaker Division leaders are the team from Pole Dancer who have only missed the gun once so far in the regatta to Too Impetuous. The first multihull continues to be the Privilege 48’ Catamaran Plan B owned by Grant Scurrah.
First in the trailable division is now Wild Goats owned by Ross Manning who rocked it in the windier conditions, with Kamikaze dropping back to second and RTL owned by Neil Rowsthorn rounding out the podium. All three of these boats are in the Skud 18 class and part of the Southport Yacht Club’s Disabled Sailing Academy which is headed up by Ross Manning who is also leading the regatta as mentioned.

Day 4: Desperado dominates to take top honours at Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta
The 11th Bartercard Sail Paradise Regatta wrapped yesterday after four days of racing and seven races for the 33 boat fleet.
Local Gold Coast boat, Desperado, the Atkinson 24 owned by Graham Sherring won the IRC Gold Coast Championship after leading from start to finish in the regatta in dominating form. Black Diamond, the RP42 skippered by Glenn Burrell held onto second in their first regatta on the boat and David Rose’s Kerisma Gill moved up to third to round out the podium.
In PHS Division A, David Chadkirk’s German Friers designed Cyclone took the top spot and overall honours, winning by the largest margin across all divisions. Andy Lamont’s Impulse X won the final race to move up into second overall, and Graham Sherring’s Desperado moved down to third overall.

First in the trailable division is now Wild Goats owned by Ross Manning, with Kamikaze in second and favourite to many, Peggy moving up to third. RTL sailed by Neil Rowsthorn finished a close fourth, RTL – stands for “Reason to Live”, and it was amazing to see all of the Skud 18 class, part of Southport Yacht Club’s Disabled Sailing Academy taking part.

In addition to some great sailing, the sailors were completely respectful of the devastation that has been affecting the rest of the country, and raised close to $3000 for the Bush Fire Relief, which included $300 from Aramax, $500 from naming rights sponsors Bartercard, and $700 raised in an auction for Rob Mundle’s latest book.
